THURSDAY, AUGUST 18

24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Hebrews 10:24-25

I need friends who will spur me on.

Hebrews 10:24-25 calls us to stir up one another to love and good works. The word “stir up” is an interesting one. It is translated as stir up or spur or even provoke! It carries a rather aggressive connotation to it, which emphasizes that we are to pick a fight with our passivity in order to love and exercise good deeds.

Further, this text gives an example of how we can spur one another on by continuing to meet together and encouraging one another as the Day is drawing near. The day that is drawing near is the return of Christ when he will defeat death once and for all and begin his reign on the Earth!

Our culture has the idiom, “Don’t wake a sleeping bear”. The author of Hebrews thinks otherwise. When it comes to our spiritual lives, we are commanded to wake the sleepy soul from a life of passivity to a live of purpose in Christ.

Today, pick a fight with your passivity and practice love and good deeds!

Reflection

Where is their passivity in your walk with Jesus? How can you pick a fight with that passivity today?

Prayer

Our Father,

Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit Hebrews 10:24-25 would change us into the likeness of Christ. We ask that we would consider how to provoke one another unto love and good works. May you rescue us from passivity and a lukewarm faith. Help us to spur one another on and continue to value the gathering of the local church. May we gather and encourage one another. We long for your return, Jesus. We live in anticipation of your reign on this Earth.  We need you! We pray these in the your name by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
