TUESDAY, AUGUST 23
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
I have a new COACH.
This passage is famously known as The Great Commission. In this commission there is one command that is described by three verbs. The command or imperative of The Great Commission is to MAKE DISCIPLES by GOING, BAPTIZING, and TEACHING. Another way to say this is that we MAKE | MARK | MOLD ! There is so much we could cover in this passage, but I want to highlight the baptizing(MARK) portion of The Great Commission. This baptism in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit would mark the person as a follower of Jesus.
I want you to imagine a wedding ceremony. I want you to imagine the vows and the exchanging of rings. A wedding is a public ceremony that is announcing the union between two people. In the same way, Baptism is a public act in which we are making a vow to the Triune God that we belong to Him, that our old life of sin and death has been buried with Christ and that we have been raised with Christ to walk in the newness of life!
There are so many things that compete for our allegiance and our attention. Baptism makes the statement that we believe and belong to the one true God! He is the only one who has our true allegiance and devotion.
Today, remember your baptism. Remember the death of your old self and the new life you have in Christ!
What about your baptism encourages your faith today? or What is holding you back from being baptized?
Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit Matthew 28:19-20 would change us into the likeness of Christ. We pray that we would remember our baptism, not just the act but it’s meaning Lord, that we are yours, that we belong to you, that our old self is dead and our new life in you is alive and well. May we live in this reality today, Lord. We again give you our full allegiance today, Lord. No one deserves our attention and affection but you! We pray these in the your name by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
