THURSDAY, AUGUST 26
They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— all the while praising God…
Acts 2:46-47 (NLT2)
A WORSHIPPING PEOPLE
Twice in Acts 2:42-47, the first church is described as “worshipping”. Further, they are characterized as having a deep joy (46). Worship and joy are a package deal. The worship and joy of the first church is a response to what Jesus accomplished through His life, death, and resurrection. Worship is whatever we set our attention on that stirs our affections!
“Praising God” (47) is a present participle, pointing to the ongoing, common expression of praise to God. Without question, this points to their corporate times of worship, but it also expressed itself in the rhythm of their daily lives, pointing others to the source and sustainer of their joy, Jesus.
The only way to develop that kind of constant joy and praise is deliberately focusing your attention on God. Colossians 3:1 says, “If then you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God”.
What we set our attention on, stirs our affections, and what stirs our affections, determines our actions. What you think about you will love, and what you love, you will chase! May we be a people who fix our eyes on Jesus and live like him!
What has your attention? How can you set your attention on Jesus this week?
Thank God for who he is. Take a second to listen to your favorite worship song and worship Him. Ask him to give you a heart that worships not just in song but in word and deed!
