“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
Luke 2:11 (ESV)
WHAT IS THE GOOD NEWS? NO PAYBACKS
A young boy in Korea was hired to help around the house for some American soldiers. Sometimes the soldiers thought it was funny to play harmless jokes on him. They would tease him. They would tie his shoe strings together. They would lock him out of the house. Eventually they realized that their practical jokes were not viewed as funny by the boy so they apologized. He said, “That’s okay, I will stop spitting in your soup now.” Those soldiers didn’t realize it but that young boy was paying them back for all that teasing.
The bible teaches that we have all sinned and that sin has a cost. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The cost of sin is death or eternal separation from God. But Romans 6:23 also tells us that God gives us the free gift of salvation through Jesus. The bible makes it clear that God doesn’t pay us back for the sins we have committed when we place our faith in Christ. The bible also promises that God doesn’t expect us to pay Him back for saving us. It’s a gift!
A lot of people are hoping when they die that the good things they did will outweigh the bad things. Or hoping that the good they have done will be enough to pay for the bad they have done. It just doesn’t work that way. We could never do enough to earn salvation, so Jesus did for us what we could not do for ourselves. The greatest gift of Christmas is the love and grace God offers us unconditionally. If you want to dig a little deeper today, take some time and read Romans 3 and the Apostle Paul’s explanation of sin, grace, forgiveness and righteousness.
