MONDAY, DECEMBER 13
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 (NLT)
CHRISTMAS AT NORTHSTAR: EVERLASTING FATHER
The story is told of a father who decided that Christmas was going to be different this year. He called a family conference and challenged his family to be more disciplined in the management of their time during the busy Christmas season. They had to curtail excessive spending on gifts. He talked about better relations between visiting relatives and a more congenial atmosphere around their home. He brought his speech to a crescendo with his final rally cry, “Let’s make this the BEST Christmas EVER!” His second grade son countered the big motivational speech by noting, “But dad, I don’t see how we could ever improve on the first Christmas.”
The son made a great point. The birth of Jesus into the world was in fact the greatest Christmas ever. Isaiah prophesied the names of Jesus. Each of those names give us a glimpse into His greatness. This past Sunday we examined the name “Everlasting Father.” The name literally means “The Father of Eternity.” J. Vine writes that the idea of Father is that “He is loving, tender, compassionate, an all-wise Instructor, Trainer and Provider.”
In Matthew 7:11 Jesus spoke to God as our Father and said, “If an earthly Father knows how to give good gifts to his children, how much more does God desire to give good things to His? How has your earthly father helped you understand God’s love for you? How has your earthly father made you aware of your need for God as the only perfect Father?
Praise God as a perfect Father. Praise Him for His fatherly attributes.
