TUESDAY, DECEMBER 14
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 (NLT)
CHRISTMAS AT NORTHSTAR: EVERLASTING FATHER – PART TWO
Ray Stedman, noted pastor and author, once traveled to England to speak at a Bible conference. The church sanctuary was filled with people eager to hear this well-known teacher. The service began with singing and praise to the Lord. One of the songs was the chorus “Our God Reigns.”
Stedman, seated on the platform next to the pastor, glanced down at the song sheet and began to smile. Then he started to laugh. The words on the song sheet had been mistyped. The congregation was belting out the words, “Our God Resigns.”
Our God has not “resigned.” He reigns forever and ever and His kingdom is everlasting! Isaiah tells us God is “Everlasting.” The idea in these Hebrew words is that Jesus is the source or author of all eternity, that He is the Creator Himself. He’s without end or beginning. He is One who eternally is a Father to His people. Now and forever He guards His people and supplies their needs.
One commentator said that, “The title Eternal Father designates Him, however, not only as the possessor of eternity … but as the tender, faithful, and wise trainer, guardian, and provider for His people even in eternity.” How would your life change if God resigned as your Eternal Father?
Praise God for His faithfulness and the difference He makes in your life on a daily basis.
