“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.”
Philippians 4:4 (ESV)
GREAT JOY IS A RELATIONSHIP
Years ago, two brothers were constantly fighting and picking on each other. The older brother would constantly get the best of the younger brother. However, the older brother was not too old to have a favorite stuffed monkey. So, as the ultimate act of retaliation the younger brother eventually flushed his older brother’s monkey down the toilet. They are adults now and even after the monkey flushing incident they remain brothers and remain close.
In Philippians 4, the Apostle Paul encourages the church to have joy always because their joy is based on a relationship with Jesus. He says, “rejoice in the Lord always.” Once you place faith in Jesus as Savior you are brought into the family of God. And when it comes to God’s family, once you’re in the family you’re in forever. The good news is that Jesus won’t ever flush your favorite stuffed monkey!
Happiness is conditional and based on happenstance. Joy is unconditional because it is based on our unchanging relationship with Christ. Take a few moments to write down some of the things you value most about your relationship with Jesus.
