For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 (ESV)
A preacher who was on a train noticed a man looking out the window. And as they went past the beautiful landscape the man kept saying, “Wonderful, wonderful.” He would pause and look for a while, wipe the tears from his eyes, and would say, “Wonderful.” The preacher’s curiosity was aroused, and he went over and sat by this man. And he said, “I’ve never seen someone enjoy a train ride quite so much. Can you tell me why it is so wonderful?” He said, “Sir, you don’t understand.” He said, “I’ve just had surgery and I have been without sight for years and years and years and years; and now, I am seeing things that I’d long since forgotten. I’d forgotten how blue the sky was, how green the grass was, how beautiful the trees, how bright the flowers.” He said, “It’s wonderful, it’s wonderful.”
When Isaiah thought about the coming Messiah what he saw was wonderful! He describes Jesus as our Wonderful Counselor. Mike taught us Sunday that means Jesus truly understands me and will guide me through the good times and the dark times. The word “Wonder” literally means supernatural. We sometimes need a financial counselor, a legal counselor, a career counselor, or perhaps a marriage counselor. However, Jesus is the Wonderful or Supernatural Counselor.
In English counselor describes someone who gives advice about problems or an advocate who pleads one’s case in court. Where do you need God’s counsel in your life? Start with the condition of your soul and move out from there. Ask God to open any blind spots in your life to see His Wonderful Counsel.
