WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 25
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV)
JESUS CAME FOR MORAL PEOPLE
Christmas Day marks another year of the Hosea Helps non-profit organization giving back to the community. This morning hundreds of volunteers will gather at the Georgia World Congress Center and feed thousands of homeless families Christmas dinner. For nearly 50 years, volunteers with Hosea Helps have made sure the homeless and hungry don’t go without a hot meal. Hosea Helps gets its name from civil rights leader Hosea Williams, whose name has become synonymous with Atlanta’s identity. Williams, who died nearly 20 years ago, led a national movement to improve the rights of poor people. He founded Hosea Feed The Hungry, now called Hosea Helps, in 1971.
It’s amazing that so many people have given up their Christmas morning for so many years to serve and provide a great blessing to thousands. There are probably countless other selfless deeds happening around our city today. The good news of Christmas is Jesus came for those doing good deeds and for those receiving the good deeds.
Serving the homeless on Christmas is a great thing, but it is still not enough to save anyone. The Apostle Paul reminds us that salvation is a gift from God and it is not earned by good works. It is received as a gift by faith. And like the homeless getting free meals today, all you must do is receive it. You may think I am a pretty good person and even better than most Christians I know. Well, Jesus came to offer you the gift of salvation as well. If you have never received this gift by faith in Jesus, do it today. There is no better way to celebrate His birth.
