“Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.”

Hebrews 11:1  (NLT)

GOD IS FAITHFUL?

A mother once asked her six-year old son what he had learned in Sunday School. He said the teacher had talked about ‘faith.’ “And what is faith?” the mother asked. And her son responded, “I think it’s believing in what you know ain’t so.”

Biblical faith is quite the opposite of what that six-year old was led to believe. The word “Faith” in our culture is often understood as a vague hope grounded in imagery, wishful thinking, blind trust, a leap in the dark.  In contrast, Hebrews 11 presents a definition of “Faith” that is grounded as a confident trust in the Creator God who is all-powerful, infinitely wise, and eternally trustworthy–and as a settled confidence that something in the future – something that is not yet seen, but has been promised by God – will actually come to pass because God will bring it about.

God has provided us with a record of His faithfulness in the past so that our faith need not be blind. Because of what we have seen God do in the past we are able to place our faith in His promises for our future. This week we will review some of God’s faithfulness to people of the faith from Scripture in order to grow our own faith.

REFLECTION

How would you define faith? What are some of the ways you have seen God prove faithful in your past that give you faith in Him for your future?

PRAISE

Praise God for the ways you have seen His faithfulness in the past. Thank God for the confidence you can have in trusting Him with your future.
