“When all the nation had finished passing over the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, ’Take twelve men from the people, from each tribe a man, and command them, saying, ‘Take twelve stones from here out of the midst of the Jordan, from the very place where the priests’ feet stood firmly, and bring them over with you and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight.’”
Joshua 4:1-3 (ESV)
REMEMBER GOD’S STORY
We have memorials for things we want to remember or things that make a significant impact on our life. They are significant people, places or events. Wedding bands are a type of memorial to a significant event and person in our life.
A new bride to be took her groom’s wedding ring to be engraved with something that would remind him of their wedding day and the vows they made to each other. The engraver asked her what she wanted and she could not decide. So he asked, “What is something you want him to see every time he takes it off?” She thought for a moment and said, “Engrave these words: Put it back on!”
One of the things God used as significant reminders in the life of Israel were stones of rememberance, also called ebenezers. Ebenezers were stones that reminded them of God’s help in their lives. In Joshua 4, after 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, God led Israel into the promised land and told them to take twelve stones to build an altar that would be a reminder of how far God had brought them.
Israel spent 40 tough years wandering in the wilderness but God brought them through. Mike talked a lot about the challenges of this last year but God has also seen us through. If you were to take a stone and write one word to represent how God helped you in 2020 what would it be?
