Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.
2 Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation
Hebrews 11:1-2 (NLT)
WATCH OTHERS’ FAITH
Have you noticed that people have something to say after they are dead? Richard Nixon’s life speaks of sorrow and deception. Princess Di’s Life still speaks of eliminating landmines, one of her favorite causes. Al Capone’s life still speaks of organized crime. Babe Ruth’s life still speaks of baseball. Billy Sunday’s life still speaks of evangelism. James Moffatt wrote, “Death is never the last word in the life of a righteous man. When a man leaves this world, be he righteous or unrighteous, he leaves something in the world. He may leave something that will grow and spread like a cancer or a poison, or he may leave something like the fragrance of perfume or a blossom of beauty that permeates the atmosphere with blessing.”
Hebrews 11:2 says by faith “the elders obtained a good testimony.” Hebrews 13:7 says “Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.” So this is a big issue in the book of Hebrews. Have heroes. Know some church history. Know some missionary biography. Know some great Christian businessmen. Know some great women who poured their lives into family and church and community for the sake of Christ. Know their faith and be encouraged by them and imitate them. That’s the point of Hebrews 11.
Who are some of the people of faith, you have known personally, that encouraged you by their faith? What are some of the faith lessons you learned from them?
Praise God for the good testimony of the people of faith you have known. Ask God to help you imitate their faith and conduct.
