“I pray for you constantly, asking God…to give you spiritual wisdom and insight
so that you might grow in your knowledge of God.”
Ephesians 1:16-17 (NLT)
POWERFUL PRAYERS: LORD, HELP ME KNOW AND OBEY YOUR WORD
Sometimes we do not ask God for wisdom because we may not want to hear what he has to say. We may want to just go ahead and take our chances with our own wisdom. In his book, You Can Experience a Purposeful Life, James Emery White tells of a school teacher who lost her savings to a complicated business swindle. After she lost her investment she contacted the Better Business Bureau to tell them of the scam. When they heard her story they asked her why she didn’t come to them before she invested and lost her savings. She replied, “I was afraid you’d tell me not to do it.” (James Emery White, You Can Experience a Purposeful Life)
Sometimes we are afraid God is going to tell us not to do it. The essence of Paul’s prayer request is that the saints in Ephesus would have a deeper understanding of what God has accomplished for them. He also wanted them to understand what God wanted them to do in the future. “To grow in the knowledge of God” a believer must have the spirit of wisdom. What the believer needs from God is a spirit that reaches out and grasps after wisdom, a spirit that hungers and thirsts after wisdom, a spirit that seeks and seeks after wisdom.
The word “insight” literally means to take the lid off. What’s a spiritual truth you remember God “taking the lid off” so you could understand? How did that grow your faith?
Praise God for the things He has helped you understand about Him and what He desires from you. Ask God to help you know His Word and then to grow and obey His Word.
