“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:32 (ESV)
LOVE OTHERS BY MAKING ALLOWANCES
A woman went to court and told the judge she wanted a divorce. “Do you have any grounds?” the judge asked. “Just two acres,” she replied. “That’s not it, lady. I mean, do you have a grudge?” “No, we park the car in front of the house.” Frustrated, the judge continued, “Does your husband beat you up?” She replied, “No, I get up before he does.” Then why do you want a divorce?” the judge queried. “Because,” she confessed, “we just don’t seem to be able to communicate.”
Communication is just one of the many areas that can produce conflict in our lives. Many of us could quickly provide a list of things people have done wrong to us over the years. However, Ephesians 4:32 teaches us to use God’s standard of forgiveness toward us as the standard of how we forgive others.
If God were to make a list of all your sins, how long would that list be? What on that list is God not willing to forgive you for if you ask? The answer is nothing. God is ready to forgive us for anything because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. If we are going to love others, we must be willing to offer forgiveness when people ask for it. If you are having a hard time forgiving someone, start by reviewing what God has forgiven in your life. Then ask God to help you forgive them as much as God has forgiven you.
