February 22
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
– 1 Corinthians 11:23-25
Live in Remembrance
This week we are looking at the Bible’s teaching on the Lord’s Supper from 1 Corinthians 11:17-34.
In verse 23, Paul shifts his rebuke to instruction as he reminds the Corinthians of what they “knew” but had denied by their selfish actions. Paul recited what had been delivered to him about the night that Jesus was betrayed:
Jesus broke bread and told his disciples how this bread represents Jesus’ body, which was selflessly given. We should eat the bread in remembrance of Him. Then Jesus took the cup after supper, stating that this wine is the new covenant in His blood. We should drink the wine in remembrance of Him.
The Lord’s Supper is an opportunity for us to REMEMBER TOGETHER that Jesus broken body and poured blood is our means of forgiveness.
The Lord’s Supper ushers us away from all our world’s distractions and focuses us on what matters. Each time we take of the bread and drink of the cup, we remind ourselves that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Jesus stepped out of eternity and into our messy world to be broken and poured out in order that we may be whole and filled as God originally intended.
So each time that we taste the bread and taste the wine, may we taste and see that the Lord is good. May we taste and see that he has a loyal love towards his people, and nothing will stand in the way of Him rescuing us from sin and death.
May we live in remembrance of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
PRAYER
Our Father,
Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit, 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 would change us into the likeness of Christ. May we live in remembrance today, that you have made a way for us to be made new. I pray that each time we approach your table that we would once again be unhinged at the reality that you chose to die in our place. Father, we pray this now through The Son and By the Spirit. Amen.
