“the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly”
Acts 17:11 (NLT)
THE WORD: LISTEN EAGERLY
A Mother was taking her four-year-old daughter to school. She was a doctor and had left her stethoscope on the car seat. Her little girl picked it up and was very excited to play with it. Excellent, thought the Doctor, my daughter wants to follow in my footsteps! Then the child spoke into the instrument: “Hello and welcome to McDonald’s, may I take your order?”
The Bereans, in Acts 17, were excited, ready and eager to hear from God. The Greek word used for “eagerly”, includes the idea of ”rushing forward”…and thus the Bereans were like children in a candy store…like a man who found a pearl and recognized its incredible worth (Mt 13:45, 46).
The Greek word used for “open-minded,” in Acts 17:1, means to accept deliberately, readily, and to receive kindly. The term was often used of welcoming honored guests and meeting their needs with special attention and kindness. The Bereans rushed to receive and welcome the Word of God into their hearts.
Are you eager to hear from God? Do you welcome what God has to say to you? If so, you are much more likely to be able to discern when God is speaking to you and what He is saying.
Jesus was talking to Christians when He said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with Me.” (Revelation 3:20) Thank God for His desire to speak into your life. Confess to Him your eager desire to hear from Him.
