February 24
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
– 1 Corinthians 11:26
A “Visible” Sermon
The Lord’s supper is a “visible sermon” that proclaims the message of the Cross. Said another way, the Lord’s Supper is a great preacher! We don’t just hear the gospel in the Lord’s Supper but we see the gospel, and in some senses, we taste the gospel! The Lord’s Supper makes much of the Gospel!
Paul encourages the church at Corinth that as often as they eat this bread and drink the cup, they proclaim the broken body and shed blood of Jesus Christ for the World. This is the call of the Church, to proclaim the life-saving, life-changing power of Jesus Christ until he returns to complete his comprehensive redemption of the World.
I think it is essential to note that both of the “YOU” in verse 26 are Greek verbs that are 2nd person PLURAL. This means that it should be read as YOU ALL or Y’all! So let’s reread it in this 2nd person plural:
“For as often as Y’all eat of this bread and drink the cup, Y’all proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
Therefore, as we take communion together as a family of faith, we are doing far more than an empty tradition or taking up time during a service, or even having a moment of private reflection; we are coming together as the children of God, purchased by the body and blood of Jesus Christ, proclaiming to each other and to the world that Jesus died so that we may live!
I pray this revolutionizes how you partake in the Lord’s table.
PRAYER
Our Father,
Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit, 1 Corinthians 11:26 would change us into the likeness of Christ. Lord, may we see communion for what it truly is. Help us to be faithful to proclaim your death as a family as we minister to the world. We need your help. Father, we pray this now through The Son and By the Spirit. Amen.
