As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
Hebrews 3:15 (ESV)
MANAGING OUR GUILT
Throughout history, people have tried to manage their guilt apart from the real remedy – the grace of God in Jesus Christ. The problem with trying other ways to manage a guilty conscience is that nothing other than Christ’s offer of forgiveness works. But that doesn’t keep people from trying.
The IRS once received a letter from an anonymous taxpayer. It read, “I have cheated on my income tax for the past seven years, and tonight my conscience is troubling me to the point that I cannot sleep. I have enclosed a $100 bill as my way of saying ‘I am sorry.’ If I find that I still can’t sleep, I will send the rest of what I owe.”
Managing our guilt never works. David tried. It was guilt over his adulterous affair that caused David to say, “When I kept silent, my bones wasted away from my groaning all day long.” When we hear the voice of the Spirit nudging us about our sin, we should look to the cross and all that Jesus did for us. Ignoring His voice and trying to manage our guilt is futile. But, because of the cross, the grace of Jesus is final. Today, if you are paralyzed by guilt, look to the cross and accept Christ’s offer of grace to forgive and cleanse you from all unrighteousness.
