MONDAY, FEBRUARY 28

1 The same thing happened in Iconium. Paul and Barnabas went to the Jewish synagogue and preached with such power that a great number of both Jews and Greeks became believers.

2 Some of the Jews, however, spurned God’s message and poisoned the minds of the Gentiles against Paul and Barnabas.

Acts 14:1-2 (NLT)

INFLUENCE IN A DIVIDED CULTURE

Almost all poisonous snakes have what we call hematox poison. Hematox poison goes straight to the bloodstream and attacks the blood. There is one snake that is different and I believe he is kin to the old serpent Satan. The King Cobra snake has what we call neurotoxin poison. When a King Cobra bites an animal or a person the poison goes to the mind. It poisons the mind and paralyzes the mind. It affects the whole person! Satan used the unbelieving Jews to sting the Gentiles with their venom that poisoned their minds. (Jack Andrews).

Acts 14:2 uses the word “poisoned” to describe the opposition Christians faced in the early church in Iconium. The city name “Iconium” is pagan, it is a name that speaks of idols used for the image of Antichrist. God sent Paul and Barnabas to one of the most spiritually dark places in the region. And when God shone His light there it created division. A lot of people became Christians and a lot of people became angry.

Reflection

How do you see society attempting to “poison” our minds against God? How has your faith shaped your response to the divisiveness in our country? Can you think of bible verses that should shape how you respond? This week we will review the answers Mike gave to the question: How can we make a difference in such a divided and toxic culture?

Praise/Prayer

Praise God for the light His Word can bring to a city. Ask God to help you spread the light even when you face opposition.
