So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away,
our inner self is being renewed day by day.
2 Corinthians 4:16 (NLT)
PAUL’S KEYS FOR PRAYING FOR GOD’S POWER: COMMUNICATE CONSTANTLY
Comedian George Burns, an expert on growing old, said you know you’re getting old when: The gleam in your eyes is from the sun hitting your bifocals; You get winded playing chess; Your children start to look middle-aged; You sit in a rocking chair but you can’t get it going; When dialing long distance wears you out; and The little gray-haired woman you help across the street is your wife.
Dr. Tony Evans wrote, “GOD designed your life as a Christian to get younger on the inside as you get older on the outside.” 2 Corinthians 4:16 teaches this is a daily progression. All Christians can learn from Paul’s example how to endure the loneliness, disappointment, pain, and persecution. Paul wrestled with “losing heart” or discouragement on a daily basis. But on a daily basis he was reminded that “our inner self is being renewed day by day.” The ESV study bible comments that this section “refers to the weakening of the physical body in contrast with the strengthening of the spirit, and also assumes a contrast between Paul’s life of suffering in this present evil age (his outer self) and the moral and spiritual transformation of his life into the image of God as seen in Christ.
In what ways have you experienced physically feeling old but spiritually feeling younger? In the message, Mike gave us three keys for communicating daily with God: Keep it Simple. Keep it Real. Keep it Up.
Thank God for the daily renewal He gives to your spirit. Ask God to continue to grow you on the inside.
