MONDAY, JANUARY 13
“All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.”
Acts 2:42 (NLT2)
A PLACE TO BELONG
Warren Wiersbe, a Christian author, tells a story in one of his books that a free-lance missionary visited a pastor friend asking for financial support. “What group are you associated with?” his friend asked. The man replied, “I belong to the invisible church.” His friend then asked, “Well, what church are you a member of?” Again he got the answer, “I belong to the invisible church!” Getting a bit suspicious, his friend asked, “When does this invisible church meet? Who pastors it?” The missionary then became incensed and said, “Well, your church here isn’t the true church. I belong to the invisible church!” His friend replied, “Well, here’s some invisible money to help you in your invisible church!”
We were created to be a part of a real church with real people. We were made to find a place where we feel like we belong. Acts 2:42 is a snapshot of a healthy church where people felt like they belonged. And this verse begins with “All the believers.” Then the verse lists several characteristics that all believers need from each other. Rick Warren wrote, “The key for churches in the 21st Century will be church health, not growth.” When a congregation is healthy, it will grow spiritually and enjoy the benefits of a live, vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ. A healthy Christian will not find his strength or determine his weakness in the size of the church he attends.
Animals of prey will always go for the weaker isolated animal. The devil is no different. He will try to go after those of us who isolate ourselves in weakness. This is one of the reasons we make such a big deal about small groups at Northstar. We want each of you to find a place where you feel like you belong and can be strengthened by other Christians. Do you feel weak and isolated? If so, do you have a small group that you can share that with? Do you know another believer who is weak and isolated? Invite them to join a small group with you.
Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory. Romans 15:7 (NLT2)
