THURSDAY, JANUARY 16
“All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.”
Acts 2:42 (NLT2)
SHARE A MEAL WITH ONE ANOTHER
There is a story about a pastor traveling with a Brazilian seminary student. Along the way the pastor asked the student if he would like to stop for a cup of coffee. The student said, “I would be honored.” The student thought this would be a time to talk and foster a deeper connection with the pastor. Instead the pastor swung into a Starbucks and went through the drive-thru because he thought this was only about the coffee.
Once they were on their way the student was very quiet and when pressed about his silence he said, “I thought you were asking me to be your friend. I thought we were going to sit together and share life.”
There is something about taking the time to share a meal or even a cup of coffee with someone that has the potential to grow a relationship. In Acts 2:42, “they were continually devoting themselves… to the breaking of bread.” Sharing a meal together meant friendship. Even Jesus drew some of His sharpest criticism when He shared a meal with tax collectors and sinners. That was because the religious leaders of the day believed there was something special about spending time with people over a meal.
Who can you show that you care about by inviting them to a meal this week? Who can you invite to your small group? Who can you invite to join you at church?
