THURSDAY, JANUARY 19
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
LIGHT OF THE WORLD
Matthew 5 records the words of Jesus from his “Sermon on the Mount,” as Jesus tells his disciples then and through the Spirit, tells us now that we are the light of the world. Jesus then gives the real-life example of someone lighting a lamp and explains how they would never put this light under a basket or a bowl, but rather they put it on a stand in order to give light to the whole house.
This week we’ve discussed the tension of being IN the world but not OF the world. Again, Jesus is inviting us as light bearers to embrace the “the stand” that he has put us on to shine a light to a dark and tasteless world. Whatever spaces and places God has given you influence, this is your stand to shine the light of Jesus. All of this culminates in people giving honor and praise to our Father who is in heaven.
Charles Spurgeon says it this way,
“The Bible is not the light of the world, it is the light of the Church. But the world does not read the bible, the world reads Christians. You are the light of the world.”
So consider all of the people you will interact with today, all of those who do not know Jesus Christ. They will not read their bibles today, but they will certainly read you. They will interact with you, they will speak with you. What will they read? What will they discover about Jesus through the way that you interact with them today?
You are the light of the world.
Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit, Matthew 5:14-16 would change us into the likeness of Christ. We long to be the lights your’ve called us to be. Help us to embrace where you have us, help us to live and love like Jesus. Father, we pray this now through The Son, and By the Spirit. Amen.
