FRIDAY, JANUARY 27

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

– 1 Timothy 6:6-10

GODLINESS + CONTENTMENT = GREAT GAIN

This passage speaks directly to the pursuit of wealth and its subsequent pitfalls, as well as the beauty of contentment. Let’s work through this passage together.

Verse 6 states, “godliness with contentment is great gain.” This is a spectacular but rare combination of being content with what God has ordained for your to have while living Christlike. While it is rare, it is a great gain! This is actual growth, maybe not the number in the bank account but the gain in God’s eyes.

Verse 7 continues, “for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.” We know that all that we have is a gift from God; we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of it! Everything that we have…the trinkets, toys, and things, they are just that: things.

Verse 8 convicted me in my study of this passage. Further, it runs in opposition to our culture’s understanding of wealth and resources. It states, “But if we have food and clothing, with these, we will be content.” I have had to ask myself this week if all I had was food and clothing, would I be content? Would I look to God and thank him for what he has ordained for me to have?

Verses 9-10 map out the pitfalls of pursuing riches and the love of money. In fact, this love of money will take us down paths we never intended on going and have us focusing on things that ultimately do not matter.

Further, as we accumulate toys, trinkets, and resources we miss the call of Jesus not to store up treasure on this earth but treasures in heaven.

May we be a Godly people who are completely content!

PRAYER

Our Father,

Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit, 1 Timothy 6:6-10 would change us into the likeness of Christ. We desire to be content with what you have ordained for us. Protect us from pursuing wealth and riches. Instead, may we pursue you. We long to be like Jesus. Father, we pray this now through The Son and By the Spirit. Amen.
