but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion,

ANXIETY: MAKING A CHOICE
Adrian Rogers gave this illustration: I heard of two little boy scouts who were supposed to do a good deed every day. They came back to the scout troop, all beat up and disheveled with torn clothing. Somebody asked them what was wrong. They said, “Well, we went out to do our good deed.” They asked, “What did you do?” The boys replied, “Well, we helped a little lady across the street.” The individual inquired, “How did you get so torn up?” They said, “She didn’t want to go.” We are often doing things for our Lord that He doesn’t want to be done for Him because we’ve not been at His feet being quiet before Him.
Jesus used a play on words when He told Martha she was distracted by many things. He said, “but you only need ‘one thing,’ and Mary has ‘chosen’ Me.” Martha’s choice reflected that she had lost perspective about what was most important because she was so distracted by so many things.
Reflection
We get to make a choice every day of how important God is going to be in our day. How often do you feel too busy to spend time in prayer or reading God’s word? Or how often do we leave God out of our decision-making process because our plate is just so full we don’t have time to slow down and reflect on God’s perspective? Ask God to show you anything in your life that you are picking over Him.
Praise
Thank God for His patience and mercy in your life when you don’t get it right. Praise Him for being good and faithful.
