WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 5

““Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing.

But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.””

Luke 5:5  (NLT)

NORTHSTAR’S APPROACH TO CHURCH: WE CHANGED OUR METHODOLOGY

Years ago, the British agnostic Thomas Huxley had to leave early one morning to go from one speaking assignment to another, so he got into a horse-drawn taxi to go from his hotel to the train station. He assumed that the hotel doorman had told the driver of the carriage that they were to go to the train station. So when he got in, he simply said to the driver, “Drive fast.” Off they went. After a short while, Huxley, who was somewhat familiar with the area, realized that they were actually going in the opposite direction from the train station. He yelled to the driver, “Do you know where you’re going?” Without looking back, the driver replied, “No, sir, but I’m driving very fast.” Obviously, it doesn’t do much good to go fast if you’re not going in the right direction!

Simon Peter worked hard all night but he had no fish to show for it. Jesus told these seasoned fishermen to go back out and let down their nets again. Jesus was not a fisherman but He made the fish and He knew where they were. The disciple’s had to be teachable and obedient in order to receive God’s best.

Reflection

As a church, we believed 25 years ago God wanted us to change the way churches did things in this community. We aren’t the experts but God is the expert. Only God can build His Church. Our role is obedience to Him. How have you worked hard all year? Can you tell the difference between when God is in charge and when you are in charge? Are you willing to listen to Jesus if He tells you He wants to change something you are doing?

Praise

Praise Jesus for His invitation and promise is Matthew 11:29-30, “Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
