“But the people were displeased. ‘He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,’ they grumbled… For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”
Luke 19:7, 10 (NLT)
WHAT NOW? KEEP EXTENDING GRACE RATHER THAN CONDEMNATION
If someone offered you a fifty-dollar bill, and asked if you wanted it, how many of you would say, “I do?” Now, if they crumbled it up, stepped on it, got it all dirty and wrinkled, how many would want the $50.00? See, no matter what it has gone through, it has not lost its original value.
The self righteous crowd in Luke 19 felt that “notorious sinners” had lost their value. But Jesus reminded them, “the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” John 3:17 says, “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.” The truth is all of us have sinned and are already condemned. It’s only through faith in Jesus and God’s grace that we can be saved.
Do you think Zacchaeus needed to be reminded of his sinfulness or told about God’s grace? No one can be saved without understanding their need to be saved. However, most of us are surrounded by people who are drowning in the guilt of their sin and now need to hear about God’s grace purchased through the blood of Jesus.
Who do you know that you think is probably struggling with guilt? Ask God for an opportunity to tell them about God’s grace.
