FRIDAY, JULY 10
“Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”
Luke 19:8 (NLT2)
GOODNESS IS GENEROUS
A businessman on his deathbed called his friend and said, “Bill, I want you to promise me that when I die you will have my remains cremated.” And his friend said, “What do you want me to do with your ashes?” The businessman said, “Just put them in an envelope and mail them to the Internal Revenue Service and write on the envelope, “Now you have everything.”
Zacchaeus had spent much of his life taking what wasn’t rightfully his from other people. Tax collectors in biblical days were infamous for finding ways to cheat people out of their money and stuffing their own pockets. After experiencing the forgiveness of Jesus, he wanted to spend his life giving back. He was willing to give back even more than he had taken. He was willing to give God everything.
Have you given God everything? This doesn’t mean you physically give everything away but it does mean you believe everything you have is from God and you are willing to allow Him to use any of it for His glory. It also means you are willing to do anything God asks of you to make things right that you have done wrong. When God’s goodness is flowing through us, we don’t want to just do enough to get by. We want to be generous with our goodness because God has been so good to us. Ask God if there is anything He wants you to give today.
