THURSDAY, JULY 15
This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I will strike you and remove your head from you. Then I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the earth, so that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel
1 Samuel 17:46 (NASB)
THE HERO: GOD’S GLORY
A certain man was troubled with dizzy spells. He went from one doctor to another and none could tell him what the problem was. He tried everything, it seemed. Finally, it was bothering him so much he started to lose weight, and he couldn’t sleep at night. He became a nervous wreck and his health began to deteriorate. He had lost hope that he would ever recover. So he decided to prepare for the worst. He made out his will, bought a cemetery plot, and even made arrangements with the local undertaker for what he was convinced was his soon demise. He even decided to buy a new suit of clothes to be buried in. When he went into the tailor he was measured for everything and picked out shoes, socks, coat, pants—and he asked for a size 15 shirt as well. The clerk said, “But, sir, you need a size 16 1/2 shirt, not 15.” But the man insisted he wore a size 15. Finally, in exasperation the clerk said, “But if you wear a size 15 you’ll get dizzy spells.”
In 1 Samuel 17:11, Saul and his army were “greatly afraid.” They had lost all hope and seemed to be preparing for their own funeral. On paper it was a hopeless situation. And God chose that situation to show His power so all would know He was the one true God. It’s why God chose Israel, “Then all peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of you.” (Deut.28:9,10) In Exodus 9:16 God said about the exodus for Egypt, “But indeed for this purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth.”
God has also chosen you for His glory. God wants people to see His grace and mercy at work in your life and cause them to give Him glory. What are some ways your life gives God the glory or the credit?
Make a list of things God deserves credit for in your life. Glorify God for the items on your list.
