“Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, ‘Where are your accusers? Didn’t
even one of them condemn you?’ ‘No, Lord,’ she said. And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I.’”
John 8:10-11 (NLT2)
GENTLENESS: EXTEND TO OTHERS THE SAME GRACE JESUS HAS SHOWN ME
John was driving home late one night when he picked up a hitchhiker. As they rode along, he began to be suspicious of his passenger. John checked to see if his wallet was safe in the pocket of his coat that was on the seat between them, but it wasn’t there! So, he slammed on the brakes, ordered the hitchhiker out, and said, “Hand over the wallet immediately!”
The frightened hitchhiker handed over a billfold, and John drove off. When he arrived home, he started to tell his wife about the experience, but she interrupted him, saying, “Before I forget, John, do you know that you left your wallet at home this morning?” (Our Daily Bread)
The woman in John 8 was guilty of the sin she had been accused of. And she was fully deserving punishment according to the law. The only reason she could be forgiven was because Jesus would eventually take her punishment for her on the cross. However, everyone else in that group was also guilty of sin and deserving of punishment. Jesus was willing to show all of them grace if they would receive it.
We were reminded on Sunday that Ephesians 4:32 teaches us, “Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.” Thank God for His mercy and grace in your life today. Ask God to lead you to someone who needs that same mercy and grace.
