7 Fifty men from the group of prophets also went and watched from a distance as Elijah and Elisha stopped beside the Jordan River.

8 Then Elijah folded his cloak together and struck the water with it. The river divided, and the two of them went across on dry ground!

2 Kings 2:7-8 (NLT)

One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex was staring up at the large plaque that hung in the foyer of the church. The plaque was covered with names, and small American flags were mounted on either side of it. The seven year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the boy, and said quietly, “Good morning Alex.” “Good morning pastor,” replied the young man, still focused on the plaque. “Pastor McGhee, what is this?” Alex asked. “Well, son, it’s a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service.” Soberly, they stood together, staring at the large plaque. Little Alex’s voice was barely audible when he asked, “Which service, the 9:00 or the 11:00?”

As the Lord led Elijah from place to place in 2 Kings 2, God was bringing the prophet to places where God had moved in the past.  For Elijah, these places he visited allowed Elisha to be reminded of what God had done in the past and why He should be trusted in the future. The four big places were Gilgal(a place of beginning), Bethel(a place of returning), Jericho(a place of power) and the Jordan River(a place of promise).

In the sermon, Mike asked, “What is the difference between the problems of yesterday and the problems of today?” How would you answer that question? The Bible teaches that God is big enough to handle both.

List a few things God has done in your past to bless and take care of you. Thank God for those things and ask Him to help you trust Him with future things.
