After David had done the will of God in his own generation, he died and was buried with his ancestors
Acts 13:36 (NLT2)
LOOK IN: GOD MADE ME UNIQUE
There is a story involving Yogi Berra, the well-known catcher for the New York Yankees, and Hank Aaron, who at that time was the chief power hitter for the Milwaukee Braves. The teams were playing in the World Series, and as usual Yogi was keeping up his ceaseless chatter, intended to pep up his teammates on the one hand, and distract the Milwaukee batters on the other. As Aaron came to the plate, Yogi tried to distract him by saying, “Henry, you’re holding the bat wrong. You’re supposed to hold it so you can read the trademark.” Aaron didn’t say anything, but when the next pitch came he hit it into the left-field bleachers. After rounding the bases and touching home plate, Aaron looked at Yogi Berra and said, “I didn’t come up here to read.” (Learning to Lead, J. M. Boice)
Hank Aaron was made for more than reading and King David was made for more than just herding sheep. Mike taught in the sermon that God used much of David’s past to uniquely shape David for the will of God. In the Bible, we first meet David as a shepherd. He was the youngest of his brothers and was not included in the special sacrifice arranged by Samuel. Nevertheless, he was the one God had chosen, the man after God’s own heart, and so he was summoned from the field where he was tending the flock to be anointed king. God called him to shepherd a different flock, His people Israel (1 Sam. 16:1–13).
Reflection
God has also uniquely crafted you for His perfect will. Did David walk perfectly? Of course not! And it is for that very reason that all of us should be rejoicing, that if God could use a man like David who fell into terrible sin, He can use any of us for His purpose. Look in and ask yourself, what are some of your unique life experiences God has used to prepare you to live out His purpose for your life?
Praise
Thank God for using everything in your past to prepare you to be used by Him. Thank God for knowing you completely and loving you intimately.
