One day Jesse said to David, “Take this basket of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread, and carry them quickly to your brothers. And give these ten cuts of cheese to their captain. See how your brothers are getting along, and bring back a report on how they are doing.”
1 Samuel 16:17-18 (NLT2)
ADJUSTING MY ATTITUDE: OBEYING AND SERVING
A sickly widow had two sons on whom she relied for financial support. One son sold umbrellas. The first thing the mother did every morning was to look out to see if the sun was shining or if it looked like it was going to rain. If it was cloudy, her spirits were good because there was a chance that it might rain and her son would sell some umbrellas. But if the sun was shining, she was miserable all day because no umbrellas would be sold.
The widow’s other son sold fans. Every morning that it looked like rain, she would get depressed because without the sun’s heat, no one was likely to buy fans. No matter what the weather was, the widow had something to fret about. While commiserating with a friend one day, the friend remarked, “Perk up. You’ve got it made. If the sun is shining, people will buy fans; if it rains, they’ll buy umbrellas. All you have to do is change your attitude. You can’t lose.” When that simple thought sank in, the widow lived happily ever after. (Source Unknown)
God is at work when it’s sunny and God is at work when it’s raining. God is always at work. We learned in the sermon that David believed that obeying and serving paved the way for greater opportunities no matter what the circumstances. David obeyed God and his father while he was waiting. David also served God, his father and his brothers while he was waiting. Eventually, God opened the door for greater opportunities in his life.
Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” David was watching sheep and carrying bread but God was at work for good. Can you think of a rainy day God has used for your good lately?
Praise God for the rainy days and the sunny days you’ve experienced lately. Praise God for His promise to ultimately work things out for good.
