“God is love.”

1 John 4:16 (ESV)

PATIENCE BRINGS PERSPECTIVE

Charles Francis Adams, son of President John Quincy Adams and grandson of President John Adams, kept a diary. One day he entered: “Went fishing with my son today—a day wasted.” His son, Brook Adams, also kept a diary, which is still in existence. On that same day, Brook Adams made this entry: “Went fishing with my father—the most wonderful day of my life!” The father thought he was wasting time while fishing with his son, but his son saw it as an investment of time.

Perspective can make all the difference in how we experience life and love. What a father saw as a waste the son saw as a gift. It’s very easy in our fast-paced life to forget what’s important and who is important. In 1 John 4:16, we are reminded that God is love. It’s important that we slow down to remember that and see all of life through the lens of who God is and what God is doing.

English poet, Joseph Addison wrote, “Our real blessings often appear to us in the shape of pains, losses, and disappointments; but let us have patience and we soon shall see them in their proper figures.” Because God is love we can know that even in difficult times He is lovingly at work in our lives and leading us to His blessings.

Can you think of any relationships or areas of your life where you need a fresh perspective? Start your prayer time praising God for His love. Then spend time listening to God about His perspective on your life.
