Upon arriving in Antioch, they called the church together and reported everything God had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles, too.

Acts 14:27 (NLT)

Former heavy-weight boxer James (Quick) Tillis is a cowboy from Oklahoma who fought out of Chicago in the early 1980s. He still remembers his first day in the Windy City after his arrival from Tulsa. “I got off the bus with two cardboard suitcases under my arms in downtown Chicago and stopped in front of the Sears Tower. I put my suitcases down, looked up at the Tower and I said to myself, ‘I’m going to conquer Chicago.’ When I looked down, the suitcases were gone.” (Today in the Word).

In Acts 14:27, Paul and Barnabas finally return home from their travels and report of all their victories. However, they were careful to emphasize that God did the work through them. Luke uses an interesting expression “through them,” which implies it was a “joint effort” in one sense, but ultimately it was God initiated and God empowered. It was a beautiful partnership. They were 100% responsible for carrying out the work to which He had called them, but it was God who provided the grace to carry out the work.

In John 15:5, Jesus taught, “apart from me you can do nothing.” How have you experienced the difference of doing things in your own strength and power versus doing things in God’s strength and power?

Praise God for something you know you could not have accomplished without His help. Ask God to give you an opportunity to tell someone else what God has done for you.
