FRIDAY, MARCH 26
Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow Me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
John 8:12 (NLT)
As a boy, Robert Louis Stevenson was intrigued by the old lamplighter’s work who went about with a ladder and a torch, setting the street lights ablaze for the night. One evening in Edinburgh, Scotland, as young Robert stood watching with childish fascination, his parents heard him exclaim, “Look, look! There is a man out there punching holes in the darkness!”
With one statement of childish wonder, Robert Louis Stevenson summed up the Lord Jesus Christ’s life. Jesus came into this world and accomplished many great and miraculous wonders, yet His primary purpose was to punch great gaping holes in the spiritual darkness that shrouded this world. He came to be The Light of The World.
C.S. Lewis said, “I believe in Christ like I believe in the sun. Not only because I see it, but because by it all things are seen.” Ephesians 5:13 says, “But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible.”
Jesus helps us to recognize truth from error. He helps us recognize life-giving choices from destructive choices. He helps reveal the paths we should take in life. When is the last time you remember Jesus revealing something to you that you needed to know?
The psalmist wrote, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Praise God for the light of His Word and for illuminating your path.
