THURSDAY, MARCH 3
But the apostles stayed there a long time, preaching boldly about the grace of the Lord. And the Lord proved their message was true by giving them power to do miraculous signs and wonders.
Acts 14:3 (NLT)
INFLUENCE IN A DIVIDED CULTURE: LIVE IT OUT – GIVE PROOF THROUGH YOUR LIFE AND LOVE
According to the book “Life of Francis d’Assisi”, Francis once invited a young monk to join him on a trip to town to preach. Honored to be given the invitation, the monk readily accepted. All day long he and Francis walked through the streets, byways, and alleys, and even into the suburbs. They rubbed shoulders with hundreds of people. At day’s end, the two headed back home. Not even once had Francis addressed a crowd, nor had he talked to anyone about the gospel. Greatly disappointed, his young companion said, “I thought we were going into town to preach.” Francis responded, “My son, we have preached. We were preaching while we were walking. We were seen by many and our behavior was closely watched. It is of no use to walk anywhere to preach unless we preach everywhere as we walk!” (Our Daily Bread).
God provided signs and wonders through the lives of the apostles to validate the work of the New Testament church. Donald Grey Barnhouse has an interesting note on signs and wonders, “These signs and wonders were specially given to the apostles and early Christian church workers because there was no written New Testament as yet. Not a line of the New Testament had been written at this point, and there was no solid authority to which the apostles could point and say, ‘See, we’re preaching truth. You can check it in the Word of God!’ There was no completed Word of God. So God enabled the apostles to perform wonders and signs to authenticate their ministry, but these wonders and signs would fade as God’s Word came into being.”
Signs always point to something greater than themselves. The point of directional signs is where they are leading you or the warning they are providing. How can your life be a sign that points others to Jesus?
Thank God for changing your life. Ask God to use you to point someone else to Him today.
