TUESDAY, MAY 17
And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.”
Acts 19:4 (ESV)
LISTENING UP: SALVATION IS ONLY THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS
Henri Nouwen wrote: To pray is to listen to that voice of love. That is what obedience is all about. The word “obedience” comes from the Latin word ob-audire, which means “to listen with great attentiveness.” Without listening, we become “deaf” to the voice of love. The Latin word for deaf is surdus. To be completely deaf is to be absurdus, yes, absurd. When we no longer pray, no longer listen to the voice of God that speaks to us in the moment, our lives become absurd lives in which we are thrown back and forth between the past and the future.
Prior to the Apostle Paul’s coming, the disciples of John the Baptist had not been listening with great attentiveness. They had heard John the Baptist preach a baptism of repentance and heard Him teach about a coming Messiah but missed the fact that Jesus was that Messiah. They missed the fact that God’s first requirement was to place their faith in Jesus alone for salvation.
In the sermon, Mike discussed what could be missing from so many different religious ceremonies. Faith in Jesus was missing from the disciples’ first baptism. Have you been baptized and did your faith in Jesus precede your baptism?
Praise Jesus as the One sent from heaven to make our salvation possible. Ask Jesus to give you ears to understand biblical truth and what God desires from you.
