FRIDAY, MAY 20
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:19-20 (ESV)
LISTENING UP: GO AND TELL
In 1629, when the favorite wife of Indian ruler Shah Jahan died, he ordered that a magnificent tomb be built as a memorial to her. The shah placed his wife’s casket in the middle of a parcel of land, and construction of the temple literally began around it. But several years into the venture, the Shah’s grief for his wife gave way to a passion for the project.
One day while he was surveying the site, he reportedly stumbled over a wooden box, and he had some workers throw it out. It was months before he realized that his wife’s casket had been destroyed. The original purpose for the memorial became lost in the details of construction. They built the Taj Mahal, but they forgot the reason for the building. They forgot what their mission truly was! (Dr. James Dobson, Coming Home)
Before Jesus ascended back into heaven, He commissioned His followers to go and make other disciples of Christ, baptize them, and teach them God’s Word. It can be easy for the church today to get so distracted with other things that we forget the point of the mission which is making disciples. Jesus’ original disciples did listen and obey this command and the worldwide church today is evidence that they did a wonderful job.
We have the same mission of making disciples today. Are you willing to listen and obey Jesus in this area? Make a list of some of the people in your life that you would like to see become baptized followers of Jesus?
Praise God for the opportunity to be a part of His mission for seeing people saved. Pray for the list of names you wrote above and ask God for opportunities to share the Good News of Jesus with them.
