Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’”
Mark 12:29-30 (ESV)
A HEART TO OBEY
Few people take time to study the US Internal Revenue Service income tax regulations—and for good reason. According to Forbes magazine, in 2013 tax codes surpassed the four million-word mark. In fact, the tax laws have become so complex that even the experts have a hard time processing all the regulations. It’s burdensome in its complexity. The religious leaders in ancient Israel did the same thing in their relationship with God. They made it too complex with laws. The growing burden of religious regulations had increased to the point where even an expert in Moses’ law struggled to understand its core. (Bill Crowder, Our Daily Bread)
In Mark 12:28, someone asked Jesus what was the most important commandment of all. Jesus answered with the simple answer of loving God and loving others. Mike explained in the sermon that the word “hear” in Mark 12 means to listen with the intent to obey. We learned that a loving heart for God will give us listening ears for God.
Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” What are some simple areas of obedience in your life that are a result of your love for Christ? Are there any significant areas of disobedience where you need to repent?
Thank Jesus for simply asking us to love Him by faith. Ask Him to help grow your love for Him and sensitivity to His voice.
