Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus by birth, the one the apostles called Barnabas

(which is translated Son of Encouragement), sold a field he owned,

brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet

Acts 4:36-37 (CSB)

Barnabas was not like a certain Baptist preacher, who one day received a phone call from a woman wanting to arrange a funeral for her beloved dog. She said, “I’ve called several churches, and everybody just laughed at my request. The Baptist preacher said, “Ma’am, we don’t really do that but I’d be interested in knowing why you want that done.” She said, “Well, I just loved that dog and I want a funeral for him.” “Well,” the preacher said, “that’s nice but we just can’t.” She then said, “I sure loved him, I’d be willing to give $10,000 to any church who would hold the funeral.” “Oh,” said the preacher, “why didn’t you tell me your dog was a Baptist? Of course we’ll do it.”

In Acts 4:36 we meet Joseph whose name was nicknamed Barnabas by the apostles. The name Barnabas means “Son of Encouragement.” Barnabas was generous with his finances and generous with his encouragement. Encouragement refers to calling to one’s side or one’s aid which can be for the purpose of providing solace, comfort, consolation, exhortation, or encouragement. As we look at his life this week we will see multiple ways in which Barnabas encouraged others.

Everybody needs a few encouragers in their life! Are you one? Let’s get even more practical — Is there anyone that this very moment the Holy Spirit is urging you to encourage today by a visit, a call, a text, a hand-written (old-fashioned) note? Be a Barnabas to that person today! You will experience the joy of being one of God’s sons (daughters) of encouragement!

List a few of the encouragers God has sent in your life along the way. Thank God for those encouragers.
