“Loving God means keeping His commandments, and His commandments are not burdensome.”
1 John 5:1b (NLT2)
OBEY GOD’S COMMANDS
The story is told of an old lady who had moved to the United States from Europe when she was a child, but now she wanted to officially become a citizen of this country. After months of going through all the necessary red tape, she was finally ready to take the required oath. “Raise your right hand, please.” She raised her right hand. “Do you swear to defend the Constitution of the United States against all its enemies, domestic or foreign?” was the first question. The little old lady’s face paled and her voice trembled as she asked in a small voice, “Uhhh…all by myself?”
Many people feel that God’s commands are an almost impossible burden, and they are all alone. If we only use mere human strength, God’s commands are impossible. But the Bible promises that obedience for God’s children isn’t burdensome and we don’t have to do it all by ourselves. Instead, with the life and power of God within us through faith in Christ, we see His commands in a whole new light.
“Keeping His commandments,” is about a living lifestyle that is prompted by love. When you love someone or something there are actions that are a natural outflow. Who or what are the people or things that you love the most? How do your actions demonstrate that you love the people or things you just listed? Do your actions demonstrate a love for God? Are there any actions in your lifestyle that would cause your love for God to be doubted? Talk to God about it.
