“We know that God’s children do not make a practice of sinning.”

1 John 5:18 (NLT2)

The new priest offered his first sermon to his congregation. As the people left, many stopped and complimented him on his preaching. He thanked them, went through the week and, the next Sunday, noticed a larger congregation. Some of the members looked at each other during the sermon quizzically. It certainly seemed a lot like his first one. In the third week, he delivered the same message again. The church leadership, incensed, met with him after mass. “Why are you preaching the same sermon over and over again?” they asked. His answer, “Well, I’m waiting for you to do something in response to this one.”

John taught a sure sign that you are a Christian is that your life changes in response to God’s grace in your life. He wrote that God’s children don’t “make a practice of sinning.” That phrase means that repetitive sin is not a lifestyle for the person who has genuinely been saved. The reason it’s not a lifestyle is because we get a new nature when we are born again as Christians. John makes it clear that doesn’t make us sinless, but it does make us sin less.

What have been some life changing events in your life? Some of those changes have been sudden and some have happened over time. When you become a Christian there is a sudden change but there is also growth and change that happens over time. Can you say with certainty that your faith in Christ has changed your life? List some ways you’ve seen change in your life immediately and change over time. Praise God for the changes.
