“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.”
1 Corinthians 12:12 (ESV)
INCLUDED IN THE BODY
A three-year-old girl was listening intently to the children’s sermon one Sunday morning at her church. The minister explained that God wants everyone to get along and love each other. He said, “God wants us all to be one.” To which the little girl replied, “But I don’t want to be one. I want to be four!” (Edward Rowell)
The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 12:12, “the body is one and has many members… though many, are one body.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer writes concerning the importance of our understanding that we are part of the body of Christ, “We are all members of a body, not only when we choose to be, but in our whole existence. Every member serves the whole body, either to its health or to its destruction. This is no mere theory, it is a spiritual reality.”
When we are in Christ we are included in the body of Christ whether we realize it or not. The church is not a “religious institution”, rather it is a “spiritual organism” with Jesus as the Head, and each of us as members of that body through which Jesus works in this world. When a part of your body declares independence from the other parts,…it starts to die! And when a member of the local church declares independence from the body it’s hurtful to that member and the entire body. We are in this together. Have you drifted this past year from closeness with the local church body? Do you know anyone else who has drifted away from the local church body this past year? Pray that God would bring you or anyone else that needs it back closer to the local church family that may have drifted.
