“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”
1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NLT2)
THANKSGIVING AT NORTHSTAR
On the morning of March 23, 2003, a convoy of the 507th Maintenance Company was ambushed. The lead truck was hit first. Other trucks pulled over, trying to set up an all-around defensive perimeter against the Iraqi fire. One Humvee, with Private First Class Jessica Lynch on board, was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade and crashed at high speed. The ensuing battle lasted 15 minutes. The US soldiers were surrounded and didn’t have a chance.
Eleven soldiers were killed or died from their wounds. Six were captured, including PFC Jessica Lynch. CIA operatives then learned that Private Lynch was being held hostage at an Iraqi hospital. On April 1, PFC Lynch was hiding in her bed when a team of US Navy Seals arrived to rescue her. One of them entered her room and called her name, but received no response. Then he announced, “Jessica Lynch, we’re United States soldiers and we’re here to protect you and take you home.” “I’m an American soldier, too,” she replied. “Please don’t let anybody leave me.
On Sunday Mike shared the tremendous trials that the Apostle Paul faced before he wrote the book of 1 Thessalonians. And somehow Paul could still write, “Be thankful in all circumstances.” That was because he knew that he was never alone and God was with him through it all.
Pastor Charles Spurgeon wrote, “Our American friends have one Thanksgiving Day in the year, but it was Thanksgiving Day all the year round with Paul and Silas and Timothy when they thought of the Thessalonians.” The year 2020 has provided some challenging circumstances for most of us. What are some of the things you can be thankful for as you reflect on the day to day of this past year? Take time and verbally thank God for them.
