TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5
“each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.
1 Corinthians 3:13-15 (ESV)
SOMEDAY SOON: THERE WILL BE REWARDS
Everywhere you go these days there are loyalty rewards programs. A close friend of mine (Larry) has over 3,000 Starbucks rewards points saved. He never uses them when he gets them. He’s saving them for a rainy day. There are coffee rewards, grocery rewards, gas rewards, airline miles, hotel points, and the list goes on. Sometimes we may buy something just so we can get the points. The goal of those companies is to get you to be loyal to them by offering you rewards.
Based on 1 Corinthians 3:13-15, we can also argue that God also has a loyalty rewards program. In this passage, the Apostle Paul teaches that one day God is going to reveal the work we did with pure motives for Jesus. The things that we did out of loyalty to Jesus will be rewarded. The things that we did with impure motives will be burned up. This is not an issue of salvation. Both the people with rewards and the people who are saved “as through fire”(1 Cor. 3:15) are both still saved.
The picture in 1 Corinthians 3 could be compared to escaping from a burning building. Some people will make it out with some of their valuables and some will make it out with only their lives. Either way they celebrate making it out. In the spiritual realm, all who are saved will celebrate in heaven that they were rescued from this world and from hell. However, some will have some treasures to share with Jesus as a result of loyally working for Him while they were here on earth. Do you believe you have been storing up rewards in heaven from your loyal service to Christ? Ask Jesus what loyalty looks like in your life.
