WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6

“If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.  And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven?

Luke 16:10-11 (NLT2)

SOMEDAY SOON: THERE WILL BE RESPONSIBILITIES

Growing up as a child I(Larry) had daily chores after school. My brother and sister also had daily chores. My sister was responsible for cleaning the kitchen. My brother was responsible for the bathrooms. And I was responsible for cleaning the living room and the family room. Part of my responsibility was to dust daily and to vacuum daily. However, the formal living room carpet also had to be raked daily. I’m still not sure why I had to rake the carpet every day, but I know that by the time my dad got home it had to be perfectly raked with no footprints or there would be trouble. I think I still feel a little anxious when I see a carpet rake today.

The Bible teaches we will have responsibilities in heaven. However, they won’t be as terrible as I felt my chores were as a kid. The reality is that God created us to work and to find joy in work and productivity. It wasn’t until Adam and Eve sinned in the garden that work become laborious and difficult. The Bible also teaches that our faithfulness to our responsibilities here on earth are preparation for our level of responsibility in heaven.

Take a few minutes and read Genesis 3:17-19. What changed about work when sin entered the world? What are the things that you most dread about work today? Based on what we’ve learned about heaven so far, how will the way we work today be different than the way we work in heaven?
