Then Simon himself believed and was baptized. He began following Philip wherever he went, and he was amazed by the signs and great miracles Philip performed.
Acts 8:13 (NLT)
TRUE FAITH: “WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE?”
Jonathan Whitfield was preaching to coal miners in England. He asked one man, “What do you believe?” “Well, I believe the same as the church.” “And what does the church believe?” “Well, they believe the same as me.” Seeing he was getting nowhere, Whitfield said, “And what is it that you both believe?” “Well, I suppose the same thing.” Many Christians seem to know as much about what they believe as that coal miner. In Acts 8:13 Simon believed but it’s not clear what he believed. Warren Wiersbe believes that Simon’s “faith was not in the Word of God, but in the miracles, he saw Philip perform; and there is no indication that Simon repented of his sins. Simon (probably) continued with Philip, not to hear the Word and learn more about Jesus Christ, but to witness the miracles and perhaps learn how they were done.” (Bible Exposition Commentary)
Many people come to Jesus for the wrong reasons initially. Why did you first become a Christian? How has the object of your faith matured since you first believed?
Praise God for His patience when your faith has been immature. Thank God for His process of growing you into the person He created you to be.
