9 The heart of man plans his way,
but the LORD establishes his steps.
Proverbs 16:9
One Step At A time
The book of Proverbs is all about wisdom and rightly submitting ourselves to the authority of God (Proverbs 1:7). It says clearly in this verse that a man does make plans, that we rightly plan out our weeks, months, and years in regard to family, finances, and career. But this scripture says that while man makes plans, it is the Lord who establishes His steps.
Ultimately, the path that we take is established by the Lord. This verse once again reiterates that God is the one who is in control and I am not, that God is infinite and I am finite, that God is limitless and I am limited, that God is unchangeable and I’m a human flip flop. This passage is qualifying who is ultimately grounding the path that we walk on…it is the one true God.
This passage rightfully orders us into the cosmos, that God is the creator and we are creatures. As a result, we hold our plans with open hands, knowing that it is the Lord who establishes our steps.

Prayer
Our Father,
Thank you for your Word. We pray that by your Spirit, Proverbs 16:9 would change us into the likeness of Christ. We praise you that you are the infinitive, limitless, and unchangeable God. That ultimately our lives are in your loving and sure hands. Help us to hold our plans in open hands, trusting you. We pray all these things in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
