“Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life is in them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God. Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life is in them.”
1 John 3:9 (NLT2)
I CAN CHANGE BECAUSE GOD’S POWER IS AVAILABLE TO ME
One New Year’s Day, in the Tournament of Roses parade, a beautiful float suddenly sputtered and quit. It was out of gas. The whole parade was held up until someone could get a can of gas. The amusing thing was this float represented the Standard Oil Company. With its vast oil resources, its truck was out of gas and had no power.
John teaches us that Christians have an unlimited supply of power because God’s life is in them. John says Christians, “can’t keep on sinning,” because God’s life is in them. Do Christians sin? Yes. Do Christians sin more than once? Yes. Does that make them not Christians? No. But John is asking about the bent, the habit, the characteristic of a life, and he’s saying that our lives reveal who we are.” Those abiding in Christ will not, indeed they cannot, go on living in sin as the consistent and prevailing pattern of their lives. This is not sinless perfection, as John has already said in 1 John 1, that it’s impossible to be sinless. But we should sin less if we are saved.
Do you feel like God’s power is at work in you? Does sin dominate your life? If so, we should ask if we have ever been genuinely saved. If you’re not sure if you have a relationship with Jesus then settle it now. Confess you are a sinner to God and place your faith in Jesus as God’s Son and resurrected Savior. Accept His Gift of salvation.
